Consultation for Professionals & Care Teams

When a specific situation isn’t improving, despite your team’s best efforts, it can leave everyone feeling stuck.

A resident may be experiencing increasing distress. Staff may be trying different approaches without consistent success. Communication may feel unpredictable, and it can be unclear what is contributing to what you’re seeing.

Consultation provides a space to slow down, zoom out and get curious so we can take a closer look at what is happening. Together, we explore the situation in context: what is being observed, how the person is responding, and what may be influencing those interactions. The goal is not to “fix behavior,” but to better understand what may be driving it and how your team can respond in ways that reduce distress and support more effective care.

This process is collaborative and reflective. It is not about evaluating staff or identifying what is being done “wrong,” but about building shared understanding and identifying approaches that are more aligned, consistent, and supportive.

Consultation may be helpful when:

  • An individual’s behavior or distress is increasing and current approaches are not helping

  • Staff feel unsure how to respond in certain situations

  • There is inconsistency across team members in how care is provided

  • Communication challenges are impacting daily care or routines

  • Teams are seeking an alternative to more restrictive or reactive approaches such as an over reliance on medications

What consultation may include:

  • Review of a specific individual or situation

  • Observation (when appropriate and available)

  • Guided discussion with direct care staff, home health aides, care managers, leadership teams, or interdisciplinary staff

  • Support in understanding what may be contributing to current challenges

  • Identification of possible approaches that align with the individual and care environment

Consultation can be offered virtually to support teams across the U.S. and Canada.
